my windows live messenger is stuffed, every time i try to type my e-mail address it takes a very long time to put it in, and the computer freezes while it waits. when i try to log on it says it cant log on because the service is temporally unavailable.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing a couple of times now. I've even tried removing any trace (AppData stuff) of MSN from my computer and then installing it.

Whenever I click on Windows Live Messenger to start it up nothing happens. I look at the Task Manager and it shows the msnmsgr.exe process, but nothing's happening.

When the process is running, can you see a small green person in the clock area of the computer screen. If so this is messenger and to start it simply right click and choose the show messenger option.

Another cause could be that your computer does not have good enough specifications to run the program. To run messenger you need the following:

Multimedia PC Pentium 233 MHz process (500 MHz recommended)

Microsoft? Windows? XP or Vista

Minimum 128 MB of RAM (256 MB recommended)

Up to 50 MB of hard disk space for installation, 15 MB to run the program

Minimum 800 x 600 screen resolution

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 SP1 or later must be installed on your computer, though it does not need to be your default.

If your computer meets all of these requirements, but you are still unable to run messenger you should contact the Windows Live support staff I've included the link for you below.

I don't think that's possible.

Only possible if you have two or more partitions on your system.

Maybe someone else has an idea for you?

But, you can log in with several accounts. Close your account 1 and then log in with account #2 on the Windows Live Messenger.

I agree. You can't do that. But you can use the Windows Messenger AND the Windows Live Messenger, although I don't know, if you can login with different accounts at the same time.

Another possibility for advanced windows users:

Get a virtual machine, either "virtual box" or Microsofts "Virtual PC" and install Windows on the virtual machine. You can now install a different WML version there.

Sure that is a lot of work, but in my opinion the only way.
If you have Windows XP, it usually comes with a program called Windows Messenger. Its like WLM buts it realy old. And if you have WLM as well you can go on two accounts at once, one with Windows Messenger and the other with WLM.
go to plus menu the preferences and then select the one thing that says use multiple accounts. and then u just click msn while u have one open it opens a 2nd one.

i just restored my computer yesterday, and i installed windows live messenger with no problem, but when i go to sign in, it will not let me..my sign in works on web messenger on my computer, and my log in works on other computers. i have tried to sign in after turning off the firewall, and no luck..

This is my problem. I have Yahoo Messenger And my Uncle has Windows Live Messenger. We are able to chat but he wants to use the Web Cam feature which he says he cant. Does your Windows Live Messenger specifies any IP in the setup? Go through the properties, remove any static IP address, since the wireless router most likely assign you a dynamic IP for your computer.

Are you able to get web pages it could be that your wirless could be droping some also if you hook up wired does it work fine I doubt you would have to reload the program if it works on the wired connection sounds almost to me that your connection could be droping out. So the next time it goes down see if you can surf the internet and do not just go to one page go to many differnt web pages if your internet connection is working fine then it sounds like it could be a issue with the program but chances are its just yoru internet connection is dropping.

When i try to install the new messenger it begins to install but then instantly a box comes up and says it has failed with error code '1601'. It says go to the windows live website for help, but there is nothing on there that is helpful.

your anti virus protection is probably interfering with the programme... look at your settings and allow msn and see what happens.

or it means.. your admin for your computer (the main person who owns and is signed into the computer you are using) has prevented you from downloading..

to get to you admin:

1) Go to start

2) Control Panel

3) user accounts

and then click into your admin and look at your settings.

If your in a corporate environment you will need admin rights, normally some places give those out for just asking for them, other times you have no chance. Try restarting also if it was a botched install you might be able to reinstall.

a simple re install will solve 90% of messenger related problems
maybe your not spelling the email address or password correctly. or maybe you need to log out of your other email addresses before you log in the other email address. i have messenger too.
There may be problems with your specific messenger, all though it is beyond me to guess what they might be. The best advice I can give you is to re-download the messenger and make sure you get the .net pass and everything you are supposed to have.

as far as i know, YM can't do video call with Live messenger.

so...i assume you both using Live.

about YM and Live,there are few things i found as i am using bot h:

1. windows live messenger take a bigger bandwidth on webcam/video call.

2. YM video call is more stable and faster connected to each other than Live.

3. the emoticons in Live (specially the costum one) are eating lot of processor resource,so it kind of itchy if you have a slow processor or do mutitasking.

as for your problem, you may try YM as your videocall program.

if the problem still the same, then you should check your connection speed,your firewall, and your messenger instalation.

I am under linksys wrt54g router and it doesn't matter if i'm wireless or wired... i still keep disconnecting from windows live messenger. it constantly signs me out. i have searched around the net but i have not found any solution. One said to use a third party firmware for my router, but i'll try that until i really can't take this anymore. any answers?

Ive got a mate who has the same problem, i think it is something to do with your anti-virus or firewall. Sometimes when the connection stays idle it can close the connection to msn.

Ive been using the new msn for a while including the beta version and i never get kicked out. If the above doesnt work then i advise you to use avast as anti-virus and comodo as firewall.

Whenever somebody invites me to play a game, it says "Windows Live Messenger is currently unable to start this program. Please try again later." It's possible there was a glitch in the original download and that's why you're having problems. I'd suggest you uninstall what's on your computer and then reinstall. Use the instructions in this Microsoft article, specifically Step 8:

He quite a few times i have encountered a sign in issuse with Windows Live Messenger (error code : 80004005) and after hours of searching of forums i found two soultions;

1) delete your windows logon username or,

2) delete your corrupted Windows Live User Corrupted Files

I think the seccond option is better, which saves hours copying user documents then putting them back onto your new windows user.

It is , quite simply, a plug in for WLM.

Im assuming you already have it.

NOTE: 2 colours will not work with MSN plus.

Go into where you type your name. Next to it there should be [Format Codecs] button. Click it. There should be a blue a 'T'. click it. Pick gradient text. Pick the two colours you want your name, and presto.!

I'm not bale to sign into Windows Live Messenger. I'm getting this error which says that the service is temporarily unavailable. The error number is 81000314. One of my contacts too has this problem. But it seems the others are able to sign in. This problem has been coming for the past 2 hours. The error number means that My contact list is not loading properly and that it will surely work after some time. But it still isnt working. I've tried using other ids but they dont work too.

I just bought a laptop and downloaded windows live messenger 8.1 beta and now all it has is the little green dude next to their name? I don't have that problem at all. I run Windows XP SP2 on a Dell desktop.You might have an older system or computer or something. Those are the people who usually experience problems. I suggest you upgrade your system, or redo WLM again. It has to work somehow.

You have to go into your add and remove and uninstall it completely. Doesn't sound as if you got it all out. Windows detects some of it. Uninstall then do a clean install.

Look in add/remove programmes and make sure it isnt still there, if it is then remove it.

If you did fully delete it then your having problems because the registry entries are still on the hard drive, windows believes its still installed so wont let you put it on again. I recommend you DONT mess with the registry itself but rather download one of the free registry cleaners available on the net. I paid for mine it was 锟?5 and its excellent, mine also cleans up other windows problems too.

Yes, MSN and WLM (Windows Live Messenger) are essentially the same things.

Their based on the same service, but Microsoft is dumping the old buggy MSN Messenger, with the new WLM.

Personally, I love WLM the most out of all my IM clients. It's speedy and does tons of functions.

People are slow to refer to the new MSN, as WLM, hence the confusion. So just call it WLM from now on.

Hi,

I have Windows Live Messenger 8.1. For two days I have been having troubles signing into msn messenger. It's an on and off thing. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

It keeps giving me error 80048820. I searched this online and read number of articles about this.

I have to say,

1.) My date and time are correct.

2.) I do not have a proxy wall.

3.) MSN messenger server says it's up and running

4.) I did register regsvr32 softpub.dll and all those other dlls they give you still didn't work

5.) When I can't sign into msn, I can't sign into hotmail either.

6.) I downloaded the latest MSN messenger, still didn't work

7.) I disabled the firewall still didn't work.

Those are the solutions they give you at any of the help sites.

I have to keep myself signed in 24/7 which is a pain in the ***. So, please someone help me :(

I use MSN Messenger at work. I use one main window to converse with a group of co-workers. But when they send messages to me only, it appears in a separate window. Is there a way that I can use just *one* window for *all* my conversations?

Ideally, if an individual messages me exclusively, it would show up alongside other messages as a "private message" or something like that.

Is this possible with either in "MSN Messenger" or the new "Windows Live Messenger" that came out last month? If not is there a prgram that would let me modify Messenger to allow something like this?

Hmm, you already recieved the update? I haven't seen this update on my own box yet, so let me run through common senses.

Go to the SYSTEM blade on the Dashboard Menu (far right blade), go to Family Settings, and have a look around there.

If that fails, there should be some setting referring to chat. Disable it, and you should be fine.

Until I receive the update, I won't really know. I'll have to get back to you on this one on Friday, when I will be united with my own Xbox360, and look at it first hand.

what you can do: add a MSN contact to your yahoo messenger.

to do so - go to add contact, type in ID and select the network.

theoretically that should be it and afterwards you should be able to chat with msn contacts and yahoo contacts.

My msn hasn't been responding this whole week!

I set my msn to automatically open and sign into my account everytime i turn on the computer. But these few days, msn would sign in and pop up the msn window, but then it won't respond. Everytime i put the cursor on the msn window there would be a timer thingy (the thing with the sand dropping down a glass timer thing [i forgot wut it was called]), but then no matter how long i wait it won't do anything. I had no choice but to close the window each time, and msn wouldn't open again for the time to computer is turn on, even if i try re-opening msn.

Why is this??

P.S I have Windows Live Messenger, I think it was version 8.0

I recently got a new Acer laptop (a few hours ago, actually) with Windows Vista Premium. I downloaded Windows Live Messenger, because I use it to talk to my schoolmates and my co-workers. When I signed in, it said that it couldn't and then told me that Data Execution Manager had closed messenger for my own good. I found out how to allow programs, and I began to allow it, when it said that it had to stay on the list. I have got an account with hotmail which i use for windows live messenger. But i was wondering if i can use my normal email address instead ie.my ntl email address. Or is it just the USA who can do that?

When i try to sign into windows live messenger, it says that i can't sign in. It saids that I need to check my key ports when i run the troubleshooter. I checked the firewall settings and windows live messenger was on the exception list, but i can't sign in. The internet works fine. I could go onto the internet, but I just can't sign in. Even updating my anti-virus program won't work, because it can't connect to the internet. I checked that my internet conncetion wasn't on the "network connection settings" section when I click advanced tab on windows firewall settings window. Also, when I check my internet connection advanced settings, it saids that the WMI database is coruptted. I tried system restore, but it won't restore my settings. It always says restore incomplete. Any solutions?

whenever my computer starts up windows live messenger, BEFORE even trying to sign in, i get an internal error message come up saying "AN INTERNAL ERROR OCCURRED IN THE INITIALIZATION STAGE. If you cant find out what the error code is, and you still have the problem, I suggest you go into control panel, add and remove and uninstall messenger and re-download it..That works for me when I have problems with messengers..

They are right - right click and delete. But perhaps you mean the whole program? The shortcut won't come back unless you put it back so am wondering if you want to go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and delete it there - that's going to get rid of all of it.

My grandad has finally got messenger. He is using the Windows Live Messenger 2008. When he signs in his name appears as William which no one knows him as so we go to Options and change it to Bill. However when you sign out and sign back in again it reverts it to William - does anyone know a way of stopping this from happening?

I have gone to his inbox and changed his registered name to Bill in the options settings but this has made no difference either !

Click the 'messages' tab on the left (3rd from the top)

Under 'Message History' the first check box should be checked if you want to save your messages.

Below that you will see the folder that messages saved to, which you can also change if you want.

When I run msnmsgr.exe, either through the shortcut or the actual icon, the program does not load. Windlows Live Messenger, does not appear in the system tray by the clock, nor does the program open, however task manager reveals that msnmsgr.exe is indeed running.

may be the Live messenger has been in the window co-ordinates outside the desktop screen. Why don't you click on the process in the task manager and click - "bring to front". Then press "alt-space" for menu, press M for move and then try to use the keyboard to bring it to the center (trial and error).

it's really simple.

Go to this website:

then click where it says Download Now. As you downloaded the messenger plus install it.

When you finish, open your messenger live.

Click on the small arrow which is at the end of your Nichname (not personal message) and click the last option.

Then edit your name (not nichkname)

Just next of your name there will be something that is saying format codes or something. Select your colour and that's it!

In the new windows live messenger which has replaced msn messenger how can I make it so that you can right click on the taskbar icon (with the main window closed) and only see your online contacts to send a message to like in the old version? In this one all my contacts come up alphabetically with the online ones just shaded green.

Yes I know it is a very annoying setup...and I do not think there is a way around it. I have tried numerous times, playing with the settings and all. Although, what I found was, by changing how I view my contacts to seeing their email address, and then clicking on the icon, and searching for that person (if i knew their email) it did work a bit better. To change how you view your contacts, go "Contacts" %26gt;%26gt; "View Contacts By" and then click on email address. The only problem with this is in the IM screens, their name is now their email address, and ruins the idea of personalised display names...Although having said all this, with the new version, you can send offline messages, which is useful...I hope this has been of a little bit of help...not a very good answer but oh well. :D

Okay, each time I try to sign in to windows live messenger, it displays and error message (code 80040111) saying the service is temporarily unavailable. Is it just me or is the service really unavailable?

i just upgraded my msn messenger 7.5 to windows live messenger and it doesnt show my friends display pictures only mine... but at the start bit when i go to sign in it doesnt show mine either..... can any one help?

Previous version used to show on main screen but now it doesn't. You have to click the 'green human' icon to show more info of your contact including the picture (if they have one).

They need to enable show display pictures in their settings and so do you

Go to Tools, Options, Personal and check show display picture then click on apply and this should show the pictures

Hi there people. My windows live messenger is like really weird. Ok here's what happen. Today after I logged onto msn, after a few minutes, my virus-system thing just pops up and says "Virus blah blah(The virus is just random number and words)" and I select "Delete virus". After that those chat box appear one by one and it types messages on its own and sent people files(I do not have those files I dont know how it sent) and I believe those files contains virus, so just to be safe, I tell people not to accept the files I sent. I don't know how to fix it, I tried everything I know; search for virus, re-install msn, ETC. And my friends think its done be hackers. This started happening today after my friend "Victoria" sent me a file call "Summer2008" I believe it's a virus because the names are kinda the same when my msn "auto-sent" the file but she said it was pictures, I thought it was weird because she types perfect when she said "its my pictures" So please help me, please I beg you.

You should be careful when accepting files with the extensions .zip or .exe - you should always scan these first, and make sure you know exactly what they will do to your computer, even if they appear to come from your best mate.

Don't just rely on virus scanners and anti-spyware. They're only as good as yesterday's news. The best protection you have against viruses and worms is your own good common sense - just don't click on that .zip or .exe file unless you are 100% sure it's safe :)

My only suggestion would be to contact a local computer repair expert. They have cleared off many viruses that i had on my pc.
so afte you deleted it - you should have immediately shut down then restarted.

now shut down your computer

restart in safe mode

run your virus scan

when it is done...shut down adn restart again

you should be good to go after this.

You should also consider installing a software firewall if you haven't already. It will monitor all ingoing and outgoing network traffic so you can tell if something is out of the ordinary. If that doesn't work, seek a professional.

Zone Alarm has a good, free firewall program you can download.
Yes sounds like you have a virus.

Make sure your virus software is up to date, if you don't have one get one as soon as you can.

You can download Windows One Live Care and use it free for a few weeks.

For the future install a good firewall and don't open ANY attachments from anybody without first checking if they sent you something. Close down MSN and don't log in again until you have cleaned your machine, also keep an eye on your email check to make sure you have not sent any messages to people you didn't want to

Completely remove windows live messenger shortcuts??

Windows live messenger persistently creates a shorcut called "my shared folders" inside My Documents folders....or even inside My PC.

It reappers if deleted. Is there anyway to stop that shortcut from being recreated or completely remove it without it coming back??

I'm running Windows XP Pro.
