Hello ,

8.1 is clean . Its the Email that you do not know anything about nor expecting that can . Its the Instant Messages from strangers that can ... if you open or allow the message to open . Its the strangers you allow to be added to your buddy list on your Messengers Buddy/friends list that can . Beware . Instant messaging is a great way for people to hack your PC . Strangers can be hackers if you allow them in .and into your buddy list . Answering and opening a strangers Email is just as risky . Build a strong password ... check it here %26gt; http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yoursel... . Never allow anyone on your buddy list or accept/open messages unless you trust them . When you trust someone to send you files , you will have to assume their files are clean . If you want to chat , meet in a chatroom . Even the conference invites are risky . Conferences are a feature in Yahoo Messenger .

no it's safe to download
The program itself will not, no. Once you have it up and running, though, just be wary of any files that people attempt to send you though IM. Do not accept anything from anyone that you are not expecting or is unfamiliar.
probably
There aren't in it any malware but it's a soft target. Without a very good antivirus (and Norton or McAfee aren't) with real time protection (like http://www.avast.com/) it would be suicide to install it.
Windows Live messenger 8.1 is considered safe, assuming you're downloading from a Microsoft server (MSN included). You should have no problems with installation %26amp; usage.

HOWEVER, you will need to keep a watch eye out for IM spammers %26amp; anybody to tries to send you a questionable link or file as that's one way you can accidentally infect your computer with a virus.

Again, the software won't give you virus... it's the questionable links %26amp; files that are sent to by others that might... so don't accept anything or click on a link that you don't trust.
