i have a macbook pro and i just downloaded windows live messenger. on my desktop an icon labeled "install_messenger.exe" how do i go from there? when i click it, it says it can not be opened.

Files with the extension .EXE will not work on a Macintosh, as they are Windows executables. You must download the Mac version of the software.
I suggest using Adium X for instant messaging. It supports all of the major IM services, such as AIM, Yahoo! and MSN. Google it for more info.
To find more Mac OS X software, click on your Apple menu and choose Mac OS X Software.
