Can you upgrade from windows live messenger?

i have windows live messenger and i have seen a different version to it at my friends house and i dont have a clue how to upgrade it..........and if i upgrade it then do i loose all of my contacts ? thanks.....x

I have upgraded, but did not lose contacts. Actually, messenger should show a small window explaining there is a new version available when it starts up . Go to the windows live website to see about upgrading. Make sure you save your contact list before upgrading, just to be sure.

I don't think Windows live has done an upgrade yet - perhaps your friend just has hers configured differently. But no,, you won't lose your contacts if you upgrade or downgrade!
