go to msn.com and they have a link for messenger adn then once there they ask u to download it, the advantage of doing it this way instead of getting the pre installed one is youll have the most up to date version.

It will download the Windows Live Installer program...

When you run that, you can choose which options you want... and then it will download and install the ones you have chosen.

I normally just choose Live Mail and Messenger.
you just go to Windows Live web site and download it for free. You have to have a windows live I.D. and password is all you just sign up for one free
